Clear nights are rare. Life is not.

Work runs late. Family comes first. Travel gets in the way. And even when the forecast finally cooperates, a full astronomy setup can turn a short observing window into an hour of carrying equipment, aligning, connecting cables, initializing—and then tearing it all down again.

StarNest grew from our founder’s own frustration with carrying equipment outside and back through Wisconsin’s brutal weather. We know other places get it worse, but Wisconsin supplied plenty of motivation.

StarNest started with a simple question: what if the telescope could stay protected, connected, aligned, and ready between sessions?

The goal is not to automate the joy out of astronomy. It is to remove the friction that keeps us from getting outside when the sky finally clears.

Set up once. Protect the equipment between sessions. Open the observatory when the conditions are right. Spend the clear night observing instead of rebuilding the observatory every time.

Engineering the footprint

Why square? More usable space in the same footprint.

StarNest began as a traditional round observatory concept. The trade study changed direction when we looked beyond outside dimensions and asked a more useful question: how much of that footprint can actually hold astronomy hardware?

The real packaging advantage goes furtherPower supplies, batteries, controllers, network gear, shelves, and sensor boxes are mostly rectangular. A curved wall forces those parts inward, creating additional clearance zones that the simple circle-area calculation does not capture.
More usable perimeter + simpler constructionStraight walls create practical mounting surfaces and useful corners while flat panels simplify fabrication, service access, packaging, and future modular expansion.

The diagram uses the same telescope clearance area in both layouts. The square leaves corners available for rectangular support hardware that cannot use the curved perimeter efficiently.

Why we do not quote a second percentage: the additional packaging gain depends on the exact telescope, mount, accessory sizes, and required motion clearance. The 27% figure is the geometry we can state directly; the curved-wall penalty is a real layout effect that varies by installation.

StarNest combines enclosure sealing, intelligent water management, environmental monitoring, and automated weather response to help protect the optics, cameras, mounts, and electronics that make your setup valuable.

Weather-Ready by Design

Enclosure sealing, water management, environmental monitoring, and automated weather-response behavior are being developed around the realities of keeping astronomy equipment outside and ready to observe. Current StarNest prototypes are undergoing extended outdoor testing in real installation configurations.

Active dehumidification · OPTIONAL ADD-ON

Managing rain exposure is only part of the challenge. StarNest is already testing active internal dehumidification to help control humidity and condensation around optics, cameras, mounts, and electronics. The dehumidification package will be available as an optional add-on across all StarNest versions.

Extreme-climate cooling · OPTIONAL ADD-ON

For extremely hot locations, we are testing an active compact heat-pump cooling system designed to manage enclosure temperatures when passive thermal management is not enough. This advanced environmental-control package is currently undergoing prototype testing.

Cold-climate heating · OPTIONAL ADD-ON

For observatories exposed to extreme cold, StarNest will also offer an optional internal heating package using a simple, efficient resistive heater integrated with StarNest environmental monitoring and control. It is intended to protect electronics between observing sessions; during imaging, internal heat is normally kept off to reduce local air disturbance, apart from dew-heater use where needed.

From humidity and summer heat to extreme winter cold, StarNest is being developed to manage the environment around the equipment inside — not just put a roof over it.

What early supporters should know.

Here are the key details about StarNest, the Founders program, and what to expect as we move toward Kickstarter.

What telescopes and mounts will StarNest support?

StarNest 5555 is compatible with SeeStar, UNISTELLAR, DWARFLAB and other compact smart telescopes when installed within the enclosure’s published fit, clearance, mounting, power, and cable-routing requirements. We will publish the validated model and configuration list before production.

Will StarNest work with SeeStar, UNISTELLAR and DWARFLAB telescopes?

Yes. These smart-telescope families are core StarNest use cases. The enclosure provides a protected home with power, connectivity, cameras, lighting, environmental monitoring, and observatory automation around the telescope. Telescope-specific command integration will depend on the interfaces made available by each manufacturer.

Does StarNest support NINA and ASCOM Alpaca™?

Native ASCOM Alpaca™ Observatory Integration is part of the StarNest core architecture. StarNest is being designed to connect directly to NINA and other compatible astronomy automation software over the network for enclosure control, observatory status, and automated workflows.

Can I control StarNest remotely?

Remote operation is a core part of StarNest. The connected interface is being developed to provide enclosure control, live system status, cameras, lighting, and environmental information. Internet-from-anywhere access and remote-site connectivity options will be identified clearly by configuration before launch.

What happens if it rains?

StarNest is designed to detect rain and automatically close the enclosure. Rain-response logic, backup power, enclosure sealing, and water-management features work together to help protect the equipment inside. Final environmental ratings and installation and maintenance requirements will be published before production.

What happens if power fails?

Keep observing. StarNest’s current backup-power system can operate the observatory for up to 24 hours without primary power — enough for at least two typical overnight observing sessions. Local control remains available throughout the outage, including the ability to safely close and protect your equipment.

Does StarNest have to be permanently installed?

No. StarNest is being designed with flexible installation options. Current StarNest prototypes are undergoing extended testing in both pier-mounted and tripod-mounted configurations. For astronomers with a permanent pier, StarNest provides the greatest convenience — your telescope can remain set up, aligned, protected, and ready to observe. A tripod-mounted setup provides greater flexibility while still delivering the benefits of a protected, connected observatory.

Will StarNest ship assembled?

We are evaluating multiple fulfillment options. The square, flat-panel architecture can support fully assembled, partially assembled, or potentially compact flat-pack shipment. The final shipping configuration will be selected after manufacturing, packaging, assembly-time, and freight testing.

Is a telescope included?

No. StarNest is the smart observatory enclosure and control platform. Telescopes, mounts, and astronomy cameras are separate unless a future Kickstarter bundle explicitly states otherwise.

When will Kickstarter launch and when will StarNest ship?

Kickstarter has not launched, and the campaign date has not been finalized. We are targeting early 2027 for the first production units, subject to engineering validation, campaign timing, manufacturing readiness, and successful funding. Join the Launch List for the launch announcement. We will publish manufacturing status, production milestones, and estimated delivery timing before accepting Kickstarter pledges.

What is the StarNest Founding 100?

The StarNest Launch List is free and is the best way to receive development updates and the Kickstarter launch announcement. The Founding 100 is a separate program limited to the first 100 people who complete the refundable $5 reservation.

Founding 100 members receive priority launch access and $100 off the applicable Kickstarter price for one eligible StarNest reward when the qualifying pledge uses the same email address as the reservation. The reservation itself is not a product purchase or Kickstarter pledge.

Your StarNest / StarNest Pro selection at Stripe checkout is only an indication of interest and does not lock you into a final model or configuration. Public Founder recognition is optional.

What will StarNest cost?

We currently expect approximately $999 Kickstarter pricing for the StarNest™ 5555, with an expected retail price of approximately $1,199. Members of the StarNest Founding 100 receive an additional $100 off the applicable Kickstarter price, making the expected Founder price approximately $899 for an eligible StarNest 5555 reward.

StarNest Pro pricing will be announced separately as its final production configuration is completed. Shipping, taxes, and optional environmental-control or connectivity packages are separate unless a Kickstarter reward specifically states otherwise. Final campaign pricing will be confirmed before Kickstarter launches.

Why is StarNest square instead of round?

The square design is intentional. StarNest began as a round observatory concept, but the trade study showed that a square uses a compact outside envelope more efficiently.

At the same 55 cm (21.7 in) outside width, a square provides about 3,025 cm² (469 in²) of floor area versus about 2,376 cm² (368 in²) for a circle — roughly 27% more gross area.

The practical difference can be larger once equipment is installed. Most power supplies, batteries, control boxes, network hardware, shelves, and sensor modules are rectangular. Straight walls let those components sit against the perimeter and use corners; curved walls push them inward and create additional clearance zones. Because that extra packing loss depends on the exact equipment layout, we do not assign it a fixed percentage.

Flat panels also support simpler fabrication, service access, packaging, and future modular expansion. The result is more useful internal real estate without increasing StarNest’s outside footprint.

Is the $5 Founding 100 Reservation a purchase of StarNest?

No. It is a refundable early-access reservation, not a product purchase, preorder, or Kickstarter pledge. The program is limited to the first 100 completed reservations. A qualifying Kickstarter pledge is a separate transaction and is required to use the $100 Founding 100 discount.

Is the $5 Founding 100 Reservation refundable?

Yes. The $5 Founding 100 Reservation is fully refundable upon request before the StarNest Kickstarter campaign launches. Refunds are returned to the original payment method when available.

Does a reservation guarantee a Kickstarter reward or delivery date?

No. The reservation provides priority communication and Founding 100 eligibility, but it does not guarantee campaign success, product availability, final pricing, a particular serial number, or a delivery date.

Will the final product look exactly like the prototype?

No. The working prototype demonstrates the concept and core operation. Production design, materials, finishes, dimensions, electronics, software, and features may change as development and testing continue.

What size is the current StarNest?

The current StarNest model is the StarNest 5555, named for its compact 55 cm × 55 cm (about 21.7 × 21.7 in) footprint. It is designed around smart telescopes and compact astrophotography setups while keeping backyard space requirements low.

Will there be larger StarNest models?

Yes. The 55 cm × 55 cm platform is the beginning of the StarNest family. Larger StarNest platforms are part of our product roadmap for bigger telescope and mount combinations. We’ll share sizes and configurations as those designs move closer to production.

What is StarNest Pro?

StarNest Pro is built for demanding astrophotography and remote observatory installations, with a 4-motor drive architecture, enhanced redundancy, expanded power and environmental monitoring, advanced connectivity, camera support, and deeper automation and integration options.
